Manny Pacquiao to donate £40m earnings from Floyd Mayweather fight to charity

Manny Pacquiao to donate £40m earnings from Floyd Mayweather fight to charity

MANNY PACQUIAO, who lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr on a unanimous points decision in Las Vegas last weekend, is set to donate half of his £80million fortune from the fight to charity.

Mayweather's victory cemented his legacy as one of boxing's best as he extended his unbeaten record to 48-0.
However, before of the fight ring legend Sugar Ray Leonard warned Pacquiao about being too generous with his earnings.
The Filipino’s promoter Bob Arum revealed his man will no doubt give half of it to good causes.
He said: “I’m sure half of what Manny earns in this fight is going to go to charity. That is just Manny.
“We don’t like to talk about money too much as more charities line up.”
Pacquiao is keen to help his struggling compatriots as the Filipino congressman’s influence in the country rises.
The WBO welterweight champion will run for president in the Philippines once his fighting career comes to an end.
Pacquiao is set to undergo surgery on a shoulder problem which hampered his fight against Mayweather.
The Filipino is expected to be out of action for a year.

Rematch? Presidency? What will Manny Pacquiao chase next?

Rematch? Presidency? What will Manny Pacquiao chase next?

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao left Las Vegas around $100 million richer but with his boxing future very much up in the air.
Pacquiao’s defeat to Floyd Mayweather on Saturday night could be the last that is seen of the Filipino welterweight for quite some time, with a combination of injury and a lack of obvious fights casting doubt on when, or if, he will return to the ring.
“We would like to do it again,” said his trainer Freddie Roach, alluding to a possible rematch following Mayweather’s unanimous points decision.
SHOULDER INJURY: Pacquiao reveals he wasn’t at 100%

But that outcome is almost certain not to happen, with the one-sided nature of the contest, the lack of action and the acrimonious relationship between rival promoters putting up a series of huge obstacles.
Then there is the factor of the shoulder injury Pacquiao claimed had hindered him in the build-up to the contest, and for which he was denied the use of an anti-inflammatory injection.
Given the noises coming out of his camp over the latter part of the weekend it seems as though the issue will require surgery, with an indefinite healing period that is likely to rule him out until possibly the end of the year.
ROGERS: Fighters cash in, but fight was a loss for the sport

Furthermore, the power struggle that splits boxing has left the 36-year-old with a severe dearth of legitimately viable opponents once he is back to full health. The lingering issues between his promoter, Bob Arum’s Top Rank, and managerial rival, Al Haymon, limits the pool significantly.
Pacquiao has already fought Top Rank fighter Timothy Bradley twice and there would be no mileage in a third contest. Juan Manuel Marquez, whom Pacquiao has already battled four times, is in no mood to accept a fifth meeting. Jessie Vargas is a rising contender at 147 pounds but first needs to get past Bradley in June, while options such as Amir Khan and Keith Thurman are likely closed off due to their Haymon allegiance.
“We will see,” Pacquiao said, giving nothing away about his plans looking forward.
PACQUIAO AFTER FIGHT: ‘I thought I won’
One significant factor that cannot be ignored is Pacquiao’s future dedication to his political career in the Philippines. It is widely expected that he will run for the country’s presidency in the future and has been in political office for six years, currently serving as congressman for Sarangani Province.
However, despite his huge popularity as an athlete, Pacquiao’s political rivals have questioned his dedication, after figures revealed an attendance record of only four congressional session days last year.
Pacquiao’s close friend and key political advisor Chavit Singson told USA TODAY Sports last week that he believed the amount of money Pacquiao would make for fighting Mayweather would spell the end of his career.
“He will have so much money, he wont need any more,” Singson said. However, Singson believes Pacquiao would be well advised not to chase the Filipino presidency once his career ends.
“Better to be a kingmaker than a king,” he said.
Either way, in his mid-30s, with some physical ails, and other matters at hand, Pacquiao’s time as one of boxing’s kings may be running short.

Chelsea stand one win away from the Premier League title after mounting an impressive comeback to beat Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Chelsea stand one win away from the Premier League title after mounting an impressive comeback to beat Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Jose Mourinho's side needed to call on all their reserves of quality and resilience to overcome Leicester City's fiercely determined challenge which earned them a deserved first-half lead through Marc Albrighton.
As expectations of another victory on the road to Premier League safety rose in a thunderous atmosphere, Chelsea responded in the style of champions-elect to earn the victory that means they will be crowned champions for the first time in five years if they beat Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Didier Drogba restored equality early in the second half and further goals from captain John Terry and Ramires wrapped up a win that was testimony to the qualities that have put Chelsea on the brink of glory.
And in a swipe at the Arsenal fans who criticised their approach in Sunday's goalless draw at the Emirates, the visiting fans roared their team to the final whistle with chants of "boring, boring Chelsea".
This defeat ends Leicester's run of four straight wins that has lifted them out of the relegation places but there was enough contained within this display to maintain manager Nigel Pearson's belief that they will retain their Premier League status.

Terrific Terry

John Terry's goal was his 38th in the Premier League, taking him level with David Unsworth as the top-scoring defender in the history of the competition.
Terry has scored in each of the last 15 Premier League seasons.
For Chelsea and manager Jose Mourinho, only the formalities remain to be completed as he moved towards his third title at Stamford Bridge, the first of his second spell in charge, after claiming the Capital One Cupearlier this season.
All the factors behind Leicester's recent renaissance were in evidence in a first half when they recovered from serious disruption to take a lead they fully merited.
The Foxes started with real rhythm and tempo but suffered two enforced early changes as Andy King and Robert Huth went off injured to be replaced by Ritchie De Laet and Matty James.
It was still the Foxes, inspired by the ageless Esteban Cambiasso, who held the initiative and it was only fine work from Petr Cech, standing in for Thibaut Courtois as he nurses a slight hip injury, who prevented Leicester from taking the lead.
The veteran blocked superbly from Paul Konchesky as he arrived at the far post, then Albrighton's shot was blocked in the scramble as Chelsea survived.
They did not escape in first-half stoppage time when the pace of Jamie Vardy posed more problems, creating a chance down the left, and when Cesar Azpilicueta lost his footing on a surface made slippy by a downpour, Albrighton beat Cech with a calm side-footed finish.

Fabulous Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas equalled his best ever haul of assists in a Premier League season, matching the 17 he recorded in 2007/08.
Only two players have assisted more goals in a single Premier League season (Thierry Henry 20 in 2002-03 and Frank Lampard 18 in 2004-05).
The King Power Stadium was rocking but Chelsea responded in the manner Mourinho will have demanded with the equaliser three minutes after the restart, the hobbling Drogba sweeping Branislav Ivanovic's cross beyond Kasper Schmeichel.
Drogba should have added a second within moments but scooped a finish high over the bar from Cesc Fabregas's pass.
The great striker had looked every one of his 37 years in the first half but was suddenly a threat and flashed a shot across the face of goal after a powerful run into the area.
As Leicester tired, understandably as their work-rate was so intense, Chelsea took charge and there was an inevitability about the goal that put them in front with 11 minutes remaining. Schmeichel did well to push out Gary Cahill's header from Fabregas's corner but Terry reacted first to push the loose ball over the line.
Play media
Chelsea were now in complete command and Ramires provided the final flourish with a superb rising drive from the edge of the area that flew past the helpless Schmeichel.
The title is within reach - it is now a question of when rather than if for Mourinho and Chelsea.
Leicester manager Nigel Pearson: "The players didn't deserve to be on the end of a 3-1 defeat. It was a tough game, we took the lead and showed a decent account of ourselves.
"Having taken the lead we showed positive intent but in the second half with them equalising so early, it gives a different complexion and the way the game developed suited their game-plan."
John Terry's goal was the 19th scored by a Chelsea defender in all competitions this season
Ramires rifled home the third goal from Cesc Fabregas's 17th assist of the season
Marc Albrighton's goal was his first for Leicester - he had not scored in the top flight since netting the 20,000th goal in Premier League history for Aston Villa in December 2011

Manny Pacquiao '100% confident' of beating Floyd Mayweather

Manny Pacquiao '100% confident' of beating Floyd Mayweather

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao were greeted by thousands of fans in Las Vegas as they arrived before Saturday's super-fight.
US legend Mayweather, 38, will meet Pacquiao, 36, for the WBC, WBA and WBO welterweight titles at the MGM Grand Arena.
It will be the richest fight in history, with the two protagonists set to split in the region of £150m.
"Don't get nervous," Pacquiao said. "I'm excited and 100% confident."
Mayweather is favourite to successfully extend his unbeaten professional record.
But Filipino Pacquiao said: "Any time I am underdog, I like that.
"It means my killer instinct and focus is fully there. Other people are getting nervous for me but I am excited.
"This is the moment I believe he will experience his first loss."
Owing to promotional differences - Pacquiao is handled by the veteran Bob Arum, Mayweather by himself - Pacquiao snubbed the scheduled 'grand arrival' at the MGM Grand in favour of his own alternative.
A bizarre spectacle was staged at the Mandalay Bay Hotel for the benefit of Pacquiao's loyal supporters, many of whom have flown in from the Philippines especially for the fight.
The hour-long show cut between hip-hop and traditional Philippine singing and dancing, before Pacquiao took to the stage.
Afterwards, six-weight world champion Pacquiao seemed relaxed as he took photographs of his surroundings while being interviewed by the massed ranks of the world's media.
Meanwhile, a marching band and dancers greeted Mayweather's arrival at the MGM Grand, moments after his rival had addressed the crowd at the other venue.
"I really want to take hats off to fans for supporting me and media outlets and blogs for supporting the event," said the American, who is unbeaten in 47 fights.
Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, revealed that the Filipino had helped devise a strategy for a fight for the first time since they started working together 14 years ago.
"We have a very good game plan to win this fight," Roach told BBC Sport. "If a knockout comes, we'll be thrilled.
"At welterweight, Manny's really not that big a puncher. But his speed will overwhelm Floyd, that's what we're counting on.
"It will be very difficult for Floyd to win this fight just by running and at some point he will have to exchange.
"We've been working on throwing flurries of punches - because Floyd doesn't throw on the counter until you're done - before getting out of the pocket real quick.
"I've never seen Manny better than this, he's risen to the occasion. He knows the whole world is going to be watching and he knows he has to win this fight."
Meanwhile, Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez, who has fought Pacquiao four times and was beaten by Mayweather in 2009, picked the latter to prevail.
"Pacquiao needs to pressurise Mayweather and land punches with speed, power and accuracy," said Marquez, who had lost twice against Pacquiao and drawn once before knocking him out in shocking fashion in 2012.
"But Mayweather uses distance very well, is hard to hit and lands with counter-punches. Mayweather wins because he's got such a difficult style."
Pacquiao looked confident and relaxed as he was introduced to fans

Saturday's fight in Las Vegas will be the richest in boxing history.

The Baltimore Orioles And Chicago White Sox To Play In An Empty Stadium Wednesday

The Baltimore Orioles And Chicago White Sox To Play In An Empty Stadium Wednesday

The Baltimore Orioles announced on Tuesday afternoon that the team’s Wednesday game against the Chicago White will be played in an empty stadium as fans will not be admitted. The start time has been moved up to 2:05 PM ET and the game will be broadcast on local television. Games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday between the two teams were postponed and will both be made up as a single-admission doubleheader on May 28th in Camden Yards.
Baltimore is in the middle of deep civil unrest sparked by the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of the Baltimore Police Department. Gray had his spine severed while being arrested earlier this month and died several days later. Protests had arisen in the aftermath of his death, leading to spurts of violence on Saturday evening that led the Orioles to briefly lock their gates during an extra-inning game against the Boston Red Sox. Orioles Executive Vice President John Angelos defended the protesters after the O’s game, pointing out the various societal and governmental issues at play that cause the powerless to rise up.
Tensions completely boiled over on Monday afternoon after Gray’s funeral as demonstrators took their rage out on police officers gathered in West Baltimore. Numerous officers were injured as protesters, many of them young teenagers, attacked them with bricks, rocks, bottles and other objects. Fires were set to vehicles and buildings while local businesses were ransacked and looted. Eventually, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake put a week-long 10 PM curfew in place and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan issued a state of emergency and mobilized the state’s National Guard.
As for the Orioles, they were also scheduled to play a home series against the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend. That series has been moved to Tampa Bay, and the Orioles will be listed as the home team, batting last and wearing their home uniforms. The empty-stadium game in Baltimore Wednesday will be record-setting in one respect.
Regarding the Orioles’ decision to play a game in front of an empty park,Deadspin’s Barry Petchesky stated that it was a “little baffling.”
The weekend series against the Rays will be played at the Trop, which seems fine and logical (playing in Washington would be another good option). But this empty-stadium game tomorrow is a little baffling. If the game is being moved up to avoid the citywide curfew that begins at 10 p.m., why not just open it to fans? If city officials are afraid of making downtown a target, what’s the point of stocking it with National Guardsmen? If they’re gonna do this, why not make it a doubleheader and knock out at least one of the games that’ve been postponed?
One thing is for certain, though. The broadcast of the game will be both captivating and eerie.

Barcelona 6-0 Getafe La Liga

Barcelona 6-0 Getafe La Liga

And to think they said it might not work. Barcelona’s front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar went through the 100 goals barrier on Tuesday night at the Camp Nou in a 6-0 drubbing of Getafe.

There were doubts expressed at the start of the season when Suarez signed. All three strikers prefer to play through the middle but with the century chalked up with potentially eight games still to play it is safe to say they have found a way to make it work.
Getafe felt the full force of the trident as they shipped four goals in just half an hour. And they weren’t just any old goals.

Diego Simeone Facing First Hints of Backlash at 'Negative' Atletico Madrid Style

Diego Simeone Facing First Hints of Backlash at 'Negative' Atletico Madrid Style

Diego Simeone has enjoyed many great moments during his tenure as boss of Atletico Madrid, but last week’s Champions League quarter-final exit to city rivals Real Madrid was not one of them.

For many it was not so much the defeat that really stung, but rather the way that their second-leg demise occurred. More importantly, perhaps, it was a defeat that may well have heralded the end of the love affair that Atletico has been enjoying with the rest of Europe, following their amazing recent achievements in both La Liga and the Champions League.
Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge did not hold back when he suggested that Atletico were a side that possessed too little football and too much aggression, the German almost gleeful that they had been removed from the competition, while others have highlighted a few other traits considered by many to be on the ugly side of the beautiful game.
In the opinion of many, the blame for all of this falls squarely on the shoulders of the prickly Argentine coach at the helm. While in the past Simeone’s tactical acumen has earned him deserved plaudits, the brickbats he is now facing from many sections are equally warranted.

Not in his wildest dreams could he ever have hoped to find himself in the fortunate position of coming up against a Real Madrid side that were missing players of the likes of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Marcelo and Karim Benzema but, instead of going for the throat with a high-pressure attacking approach, what we got was a team that reverted to type.
Simeone organised his side with a dour, deep-lying defence and Mario Mandzukic upfront—a player who Simeone himself has admitted isn’t suited for that type of game, quite simply because he isn’t fast enough.
With a brace either side of the first leg in games against Malaga and Deportivo, Simeone’s trump card was surely Antoine Griezmann, unquestionably Atletico’s most dangerous player in recent weeks, whereas Mandzukic has the dubious distinction of being the club striker with the least number of shots on goal since 2007.
He has also been carrying an ankle injury for about 10 weeks now, and has only appeared in the big games, having asked Simeone to be rested in the others. He was clearly not fully fit and as such should not have played—but even if fully fit, the style of play would still not have suited him.
Griezmann was also not at his most effective, primarily because of where the Atletico game plan compelled him to play, but even so Real must have breathed a sigh of relief when they saw him replaced by Raul Garcia—who never looked like he would be able to bring an effective counter-attacking plan into being.

Playing Jesus Gamez at left-back, primarily so his huge throws could be used at set pieces, was also a serious tactical error. Unfortunately Gamez is a naturally right-footed player and playing him out of position effectively ended any real chances Atletico had to cause damage in attack down that side of the pitch.
No one campaigned more than Simeone himself to bring Fernando Torres back to Atletico Madrid; Torres scored twice on his return, and also against Barcelona, yet since then he hasn’t featured much in any of the big games, not even as an impact player in the last half hour or so.
Some suggest Simeone doesn't enjoy having a player that's bigger than him. But then why bring Torres back to the club? The general impression that is left is that this was a team and a manager that didn’t go for it, seemingly looking for a 0-0, extra-time, and then the lottery of penalties.
Real played Sergio Ramos out of position in midfield, where he could—and should—have been exposed. The fact that he wasn’t says it all.
However, there are deeper reasons why there are chords of disharmony beginning to ring around the Vicente Calderon. They have known Simeone here for many years, both as a player and now as a very successful coach, and long accepted he has never been one to advance a career through his ability to make friends.
That was an approach that was sustainable while Atletico Madrid were doing the business, but there are certain personal situations in play now. As they say, "what goes around, comes around" and now perhaps the chickens are coming home to roost. There is the feeling in some quarters that, despite all of his past proclamations, perhaps Simeone is less enthusiastic about the collective approach than he is his own personal agenda.
The signing of a new contract, swiftly followed by his departure to Argentina before his assistants Mono Burgos and Profe Ortega had even completed negotiations on their own particular deals, left something of a bad taste.

Los Angeles-area NFL stadium plans feature lightning bolts, eternal flame

Los Angeles-area NFL stadium plans feature lightning bolts, eternal flame

New designs released Thursday night for a proposed NFL stadium in the Los Angeles area include simulated lightning bolts for the San Diego Chargers and a flame honoring late Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.
The thoroughly revamped plans for the $1.7 billion joint stadium proposal by the two teams came just two months after the project and an initial set of designs were first announced and two days after it received approval from the Carson City Council.
The designs were presented in New York this week to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league's committee on possibly relocating a team to greater Los Angeles.
The flowing, metallic modern stadium design features a horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement that is open on one end.
"We wanted the building to be iconic and sleek, like a luxury sports car," David Manica, president of stadium designer Manica Architecture, told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported on the revamped design. "Very aerodynamic, in motion, flowing lines from every angle."
Its primary feature is a tower about 120 feet tall that will give off lightning bolts during Chargers games. It will feature a flaming cauldron in Davis's honor during Raiders games. The architects say it can also become a Lombardi Trophy if the venue hosts a Super Bowl.
The tower is one of several stadium elements that will transform based on which team is playing in it, including the color of the seats, the architects said.
It also features a multilevel high-rise of suites on one side.
But not every element is ultra-modern. It also features a peristyle on one end that echoes the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, former home of the Raiders and Rams and the most storied football venue in the LA area.
"Ownership really wants to celebrate the history and enthusiasm of football in Los Angeles," said Manica, who previously worked for the firm that designed the Texans' stadium in Houston and remodeled the Miami Dolphins' stadium.
Chargers spokesman Mark Fabiani said in a statement that the "new LA stadium vision is the result of two months of close collaboration between the Raiders and Chargers."
On Tuesday night the Carson City Council unanimously approved the project, leaving the next move in the hands of the teams and the NFL.
Another stadium project, whose plans are much further along, is underway in nearby Inglewood and has St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke as a partner.
Under NFL rules, the next opportunity for a team to file to relocate to either stadium would be in January. The move would have to clear a tangle of league hurdles, including getting support from at least 24 of the 32 teams.
