Yuna Kim talks about why she left YG Entertainment

Yuna Kim talks about why she left YG Entertainment

The Ark's Yuna Kim recently revealed why she left YG Entertainment, how she became a member of The Ark, as well as her thoughts on finally making her debut in an interview with Star News.

Yuna Kim revealed that the reason why she left YG Entertainment was she didn't think that she was skilled enough to compete against the other trainees.

She said, "At the time, I wasn't ready spiritually, nor was I ready to sing or dance. I felt that I had no skill. I just had talent. There were so many skilled kids in YG Entertainment so the competition was high. I realized how lacking I was. I wondered if being a singer was the right path for me, and finally I decided that I should go back to school."
In 2013, Yuna Kim was reported to be leaving YG to pursue her education. However, the young artist revealed during the interview that she wasn't able to throw away her dream of becoming a singer and made her way back to Korea.

Yuna Kim said, "I really was going to study. I didn't think that I would try to become a singer again. I was persuaded by the CEO of the agency that I'm in right now. When we had a meeting in Korea, he asked me to rap and I was so bad at it, but he gave me the courage and said, 'I think you will do well.' And thats how I became a singer. I am very thankful.

Meanwhile, The Ark just recently debuted with "The Light," an easy-flowing and uplifting track dedicated for all the youths who are currently pursuing their dreams.

Blood donations need to rise ahead of Olympics Games and Diamond Jubilee

Blood donations need to rise ahead of Olympics Games and Diamond Jubilee

Blood donations desperately need to increase by 30 per cent ahead of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympic Games this summer, the NHS has said.

The NHS has warned regular donors are more likely to miss appointments more when big events take place.
As well as the Diamond Jubilee and London Games, Wimbledon and the European Championships also take place this summer, meaning donors’ normal routines are bound to be put on hold.
The Olympics and Paralympics are expected to bring an extra 1.2million visitors to the UK and tourists from overseas will also put pressure on certain blood groups that are more common in other countries.
Britons with O positive and O negative blood types are particularly in demand.

First-time donors are being encouraged to give blood as additional appointments are created and opening hours extended in a bid to give donors more flexibility.
Jon Latham, spokesman for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: ‘This year we have a unique situation and need the public’s help to counterbalance the inevitable dip in donations as people celebrate a memorable summer for the country.
‘We need to adjust the mix of stocks so we are well prepared as a responsible host for these exciting events.’

He told the BBC: ‘Every unit of blood saves or improves the life of three people. We obviously want to make sure everyone enjoys the Games, and want to make sure that if there are any accidents we have the blood supplies to help them recover quickly.’
Hospitals in England and North Wales need 7,000 units of blood every day and yet just four per cent of people who could donate blood actually do so.
Because blood decomposes quickly, with red blood cells and platelets lasting 35 and seven days respectively, supplies have to be constantly replenished.

Airbus Helicopters cut through the skies of Cambodia

Airbus Helicopters cut through the skies of Cambodia

Last Tuesday in a bid to further open up Cambodia’s skies to commercial air traffic, Airbus Helicopters Southeast Asia (AHSA) conducted their first demonstration flight of its H130 chopper in Phnom Penh to showcase the versatile capabilities of their light rotorcraft for both private and commercial operators in the Kingdom. The brief tour ferried passengers and members of the media over the capital starting at the Phnom Penh helipad of Helistar, one of two helicopter charter companies in Cambodia, near Pochentong International Airport to the lush gardens of Sofitel, landing at around 4pm.
The European-made H130 is a member of Airbus Helicopters’ renowned Ecureuil family, and is equipped with a powerful turbo shaft engine that builds on the design of the popular EC130 model, a popular aircraft which flies missions around the world.
The inside of the helicopter offers outstanding flexibility for operators due to its wide unobstructed, flat-floor cabin which can accommodate an array of equipment.
According to AHSA vice president, Lionel Sinai- Sinelnikoff, there are already five AHSA-made civil helicopters in the country performing missions such as heli-tourism, passenger transport and private and business aviation. The five choppers are currently used by three companies that include Union Development Group in Koh Kong, and two transportation companies, Helicopter Cambodia and Helistar Cambodia.
Demand for such services is expected to grow significantly in the near future, said Sinai-Sinelnikoff, expecting that the current market forecasts an increase of two to three additional helicopters a year. The H130 brings Cambodian provinces and islands closer than ever, as popular Koh Rong Island can be reached in approximately one hour from Phnom Penh.
By not just tapping into Cambodia’s growing tourism market, Airbus believes the country’s infrastructural development can be boosted through the use of helicopters as aerial work for mining, construction of roads, railways and real estate, power lines and telecom towers inspection and maintenance can be carried out much more easily and efficiently. With its ability for a quick takeoff, the H130 is perfectly suited for missions in remote and hard to reach areas where traditional ground transportation is lacking.
“The H130 is a highly versatile helicopter which will provide a cost-efficient solution to meet the needs of this country, from infrastructural development, passenger transport to heli-tourism,” said Derek Sharples, Managing Director of AHSA. “Besides offering the right products, we also have the capability to provide a full suite of after sales support and services through our facilities situated in nearby Thailand and Singapore, ensuring high level of customer service.”
The H130 is a high-performance, multifunctional, single-engine helicopter that can accommodate one pilot and up to seven passengers. With its’ unevenly spaced blades and an enclosed tail fin that reduces outside noise by 50 per cent, the H130 is the quietest helicopters on the market. It provides an unprecedented level of comfort and visibility with a wide panoramic view. Integrating Airbus Helicopters’ latest technologies ensures the highest standard of safety and performance. The H130 represents the safest, most technologically advanced, yet economical solution within the single-engine helicopter category.
Airbus Helicopters is the world’s leading helicopter manufacturer. Established in 1997 in Singapore, AHSA is the training and technical hub for the ASEAN. AHSA handles sales and customer support across 15 countries in total, from as far away as Nepal to Timor-Leste. In 2014, AHSA achieved a record turnover of 140 million Euros. With a staff of more than 220 professionals, the company has developed a successful commercial network with its Singapore-based sales team, regional sales managers and technical representatives that service and maintain over 300 helicopters in the region.
Sin Chanchhaya, son of iconic singer Sin Sisamouth dies, 58

Sin Chanchhaya, son of iconic singer Sin Sisamouth dies, 58

Sin Chanchhaya, son of legendary Cambodian singer Sin Sisamouth and director of the Sin Sisamouth Association, has died. He was 58.
Chanchhaya, who was also a musician and music teacher, passed away about 10:30am yesterday after suffering a fall and hitting his head at his Tuol Kork home. He is survived by a wife and three children.
Over the past decade, Chanchhaya had been fighting to protect his father’s legacy by having Sisamouth’s songs registered as his family’s intellectual property.
In May last year, Chanchhaya told the Post he wanted control over the rights to his father’s songs in order to maintain their integrity and quality
“Many of my father’s songs are romantic and gentle, and now they change the songs and make them impolite,” he said. “It’s like a cook has already made the food and added the spices and then they come along and put more spices in and it’s not tasty anymore.”
He said his worst fear was that the younger generation wouldn’t know who was responsible for the songs.
In December, the Ministry of Commerce held a ceremony to officially recognise the family’s copyright over 73 of Sisamouth’s songs. However, it’s believed the prolific songwriter penned hundreds during his career.
Chanchhaya’s daughter Sin Sethsochhata, 21, yesterday said the family was busy making preparations for her father’s funeral and had not yet decided who would take over as director of the association.
“It was very sudden,” she explained.
Eldest son Sinn Sethekol, 33, said he regretted not being able to hear his father’s last words because the death was unexpected.
“I’d like to ask for the Khmer artists attendance [to the funeral] and generous contribution to my father’s funeral expenses,” he said. “We’re poor and would appreciate help to overcome the difficulty.”

News of Chanchhaya’s death came as a shock to many in the Cambodian music scene with many condolence messages posted on Facebook.
Khmer Artist Association president Sos Mach, a close friend of Chanchhaya, said he was upset by the news.
“He’s gone forever,” Mach said. “Chanchhaya and I made songs for each other and consider each other as siblings. Now he left me and never come back. I wish his soul is going to nirvana.”
US filmmaker Chris Parkhurst, who is making a documentary Elvis of Cambodia about Sisamouth’s legacy, yesterday paid tribute to Chanchhaya for his selfless devotion to preserving his father’s legacy.
“I think his contribution was always about the legacy of his father,” Parkhurst said. “Sin Chanchhaya, he was a professional musician, he was a teacher, he ran the association – but it always seemed like it was about the legacy of his father and he always explained it that way.
“He was never trying to be a musician himself in a way of trying to compete with his father or he never even thought he was in his father’s shadow.
“By what he was doing with the association and teaching students here in Cambodia he felt like that was the best way to honour Sisamouth.”
Kingdom to export crocodile skins

Kingdom to export crocodile skins

Cambodia will export 1,000 crocodile skins to France next month in a pilot project that, if successful, will look to increase the sale of skins to the EU, according to a Siem Reap crocodile farmers association representative.
Sen Rith, deputy president of the Association of Cambodian Crocodile Farm Development to Siem Reap and owner of a crocodile farm in the province, said Cambodian skins were gaining preference with international buyers due to the Kingdom’s record of protecting wild crocodiles and only using farmed crocodiles.
“They are interested to buy crocodile skins from us because our skins are softer,” he said. “Cambodia has the highest number of wild crocodiles among countries in the region, which reflects that we have done a good job in the protection of wild crocodiles,” he said.
Cambodia currently exports crocodile skins and meat to Vietnam, Thailand and China, with the government actively encouraging farmers to enter the sector.
Since 2005, the government has been pushing farmers to stop the export of baby crocodiles and instead sell the skins of fully-grown crocodiles. Farmers can sell baby crocodiles, aged between 3 to 12 months, for $12 to $14 per head, whereas the skin of a 3-year-old adult could be sold for $80 a piece.
Ung Visal, deputy president of the Angkor Association of Crocodile Feeders in Siem Reap, said he was hopeful about market prospects for Cambodian crocodile farmers, but said they still had a long way to go to catch up to the premium market and were being held back by the lack of capital and farming techniques.
“This time, the buyers [from the EU] are looking for grade C skins, a standard which is not so hard to meet. They offer more than $100 per skin for grade C. If our skins can be categorised as grade B, then we get 20 per cent more and for grade A, we get 50 per cent more,” he said.
According to Visal, a few potential farms will be selected to provide skins for the pilot project.
“I am so excited for this chance they are offering us to be the suppliers. With a stable market, I think our farmers will be able to expand and improve the quality,” said Visal.
Heng Sovannara, chief of the Crocodile Development Division at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said the export process involves getting a licence from CITES, or the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which is an international wildlife protection treaty between governments.
“Before skins can be exported, the exporters have to ask permission from the ministry and then we apply for a licence with CITES for cross-border export. We have already gotten a licence from CITES for Cambodian crocodile skins to be exported to the EU,” he said.
He said the export project means Cambodian crocodile farmers now have the opportunity to access a new and “potential market.”
“Buyers in the EU are really focusing on quality. If the pilot will be a success, they will have a contract with Cambodia and see how much we can supply,” he added.
Sovannara said Cambodian farmers should focus on improving quality of their skins in order to tap bigger markets and increase margins. Some 357 crocodile farms are registered with the Ministry of Fisheries and Administration, with around 50,000 baby crocodiles being exported in 2013.

Ranariddh in car accident

Ranariddh in car accident

Funcinpec party head Prince Norodom Ranariddh was the victim of a hit-and-run accident on Saturday that left at least six injured in Kampong Cham province, including the prince’s wife, officials said yesterday.
Funcinpec spokesperson Nhep Bun Chin said in an interview yesterday that he “dared not say” the car crash was an act of political terrorism, but expressed doubt that it was simply an accident.
“The matter of the truck hitting the prince’s car was not normal,” he said. “I would like to appeal to all relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate [the case] and to bring justice for the prince. It was not incidental, because the truck escaped and hit the prince’s car in the right lane.”
Bun Chin said that he has asked the party’s legal team to prepare a lawsuit with regards to the accident, but declined to give details, including which lawyer was working on the case. It is expected to be filed today.
“I cannot speak about the lawsuit, and must leave it to the lawyers to work out the legal procedures,” he said.
He added that the prince’s wife, Ouk Phalla, was seriously injured and sent to a hospital in Bangkok yesterday.
However, Kampong Cham provincial police chief Ben Rath yesterday quickly dismissed allegations that the hit-and-run was politically motivated.
“I went to the site of incident and thoroughly examined [it],” he said. “It was confirmed as a traffic accident. It was not a political matter.”
Prince Ranariddh in Kampong Cham
The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, when a dump truck hit the prince’s motorcade while it was on its way back to Phnom Penh from Kampong Cham province following a political rally. The truck hit the prince’s vehicle and one of his bodyguards’.
The prince, son of the late King Norodom Sihanouk, met nearly 3,000 supporters in Wat Kor in the Prey Chhor district of Kampong Cham.
There he urged people to not vote for the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), arguing that CNRP leader Sam Rainsy and deputy Kem Sokha egged on demonstrations following the 2013 election – which ultimately left at least five dead – to serve their own political interests and further their ability to gain a foothold in the National Assembly.
The prince went on to lash out at Rainsy for having in the past attacked the prince’s power-sharing agreement with Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) following the 1993 election.
“While you [Rainsy] hit me, I will hit back at you and I will play until the end,” Ranariddh told his supporters. “If I did not share power at that time, civil war would have occurred . . . Ranariddh shared power to consider the interests of the nation and the lives of the Cambodian people.”

Rediscovered Francis Bacon portraits up for auction

Rediscovered Francis Bacon portraits up for auction

Two self-portraits by Francis Bacon are going on public display for the first time after being rediscovered in a private collection, before being sold.
Although experts knew the works by the late painter existed, they had no idea who had bought them.
Descendants of the original owner have decided to sell the paintings, which are expected to fetch up to £15m each.
The artworks are titled Self-Portrait 1975 and Three Studies for Self-Portrait (1980).

Bacon's eyes are downcast in this artwork, as he became more haunted by the prospect of death

A Bacon painting featuring his friend and fellow artist Lucian Freud, became the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction when it fetched $142m (£89m) in New York in 2013.
Oliver Barker, Sotheby's senior international specialist in contemporary art, described the discovery of the portraits as "a pretty extraordinary collecting moment".
"(Art dealer) Marlborough Fine Art kept a photographic archive and so both of these paintings appeared in a book on Bacon's self-portraits, but apart from being reproduced in books they've not been seen," he said.
"We knew of the existence of the paintings but simply had no idea where they could be. The first time I saw these paintings it was such a wonderful awakening. They're both so luminous."
Self-Portrait 1975 was painted at the height of Bacon's career in the period which followed the suicide of his former lover George Dyer in 1971. Although Bacon was in his 60s he looked much younger in the work, having dyed his hair and worn make-up as he grew older.
Three Studies for Self-Portrait (1980) shows him with downcast eyes, increasingly haunted by the inevitability of death.
Mr Barker said that the artist "gave himself film star-style looks, appearing as photogenic as possible while still being highly self-critical".
"He paints himself with a much more youthful appearance," he said.

The self-portraits go on sale at Sotheby's London Contemporary Art Evening Sale on 1 July.

The woman who adopts dead babies

The woman who adopts dead babies

Twelve years ago Bernarda Gallardo saw a headline in the local paper that changed her life. After reading the story about an abandoned baby she decided she had to help.
"They killed and dumped a newborn baby on the rubbish heap," read the headline.
The little girl was found on 4 April 2003 - her body had been put in a black rubbish bag and thrown in a bin which was later emptied and its contents taken to the local dump.
There are people who make a living recycling rubbish from the dump in the southern Chilean town of Puerto Montt, and it was one of them who found the body.
Gallardo was horrified. She immediately decided to give the baby a proper burial. She was in the process of adopting a child at the time and immediately felt a connection - this could easily have been her baby and she wanted to do something for it.
"If you get a baby that is alive you clothe it and feed it and put it in a cot. If your baby arrives dead you have to get a coffin and give it a decent burial," she says.

"A horrendous criminal act. A newborn baby was thrown on the rubbish dump"

But she also knows that some mothers don't want to keep their children, and even feels a connection with them.
"These are young women, often no more than girls who are victims of rape and incest. If it is their father or stepfather who rapes them, they are too frightened to speak out. The rapists are often the ones who are providing for the family," she says.
Gallardo was raped by a man in her neighbourhood in 1976 when she was 16.
She became pregnant and had the baby, a daughter, whom she loved and brought up herself.
"After I was raped, I was lucky enough to be able to move on because of the support I got from my friends. But if I had been left on my own, perhaps I would have felt as helpless as they do."
Another reason babies are abandoned is poverty. "The women simply can't afford to feed another baby," says Gallardo.
It's difficult to estimate how many babies are dumped in Chile. Official statistics show that about 10 are found each year, but the real figure could be much higher - most dumps are closed to the public so it's possible that there are more bodies that have never been found.
Gallardo's desire to do something for the baby in Puerto Montt was the start of a long and bureaucratic process.
She decided to name the girl Aurora after the Roman goddess of dawn, and in fact the baby did bring light to the darkness.

The grave where Aurora and three other abandoned babies are now buried

But getting hold of Aurora's body so it could be buried wasn't easy. In Chile if a body isn't claimed by a member of the family it's classed as human waste and disposed of with other surgical waste - Gallardo managed to step in quickly enough to stop this happening.
Doctors have to prove that a baby lived in order for it to be registered as a human being and thus allowed a proper burial - so they had to examine Aurora's body.
Often doctors prefer to say a baby died at birth because they want to protect vulnerable mothers. Abortion is illegal in Chile and if a mother is caught abandoning her baby, even if she leaves it at a hospital, she can face up to five years in prison.
Gallardo also had to adopt Aurora in order to bury her, even though the child was dead.
Initially the judge in charge of the case had his doubts about Gallardo. He thought that she was Aurora's biological mother and that she only wanted the body because she was feeling guilty about dumping her.
Once she convinced him of her good intentions, he told her it was the strangest case he had ever come across and that no-one in Chile had ever adopted a dead baby before. But he believed she was doing the right thing.

It took many months to get the medical tests done and the paperwork sorted out but finally Gallardo was allowed to take Aurora's body for burial. Five-hundred people came to the funeral - they had been following Aurora's progress in the local newspaper where the story was originally published.
Gallardo says the atmosphere was like a big birthday party - a celebration of Aurora's life. There were children, doctors, nurses, the local press, people from the countryside and the judge. They sang songs, read poems about Aurora and played music.
It was important to Gallardo that so many people came to the public ceremony. "I wanted to get my local community to think about what was going on. Why are babies being left to die when there are least four families ready and waiting and in the right condition to adopt an unwanted baby?" she says.
"Instead of killing the babies give them up for adoption!"

This poster reads, "Don't throw away his life"

The very day after the funeral another body, a baby boy, was found dumped. Gallardo was upset and couldn't believe that all her work had seemingly been in vain.
By then she was well-known locally. People told her she had done the right thing for Aurora - and then asked her what she was going to do about the boy.
Eventually she decided to stick posters on all of Puerto Montt's rubbish dumps telling people. "Don't throw your babies in the rubbish," and reminding them that two babies had been dumped in recent months - Aurora and then Manuel.
She thinks things are starting to change with better education about domestic abuse and more advice on family planning.
But Gallardo feels the law in Chile still victimises women who are poor or have been abused.
By coincidence, her own family history reveals another connection with babies who have been abandoned. Her great grandmother was found on the steps of a nunnery in Italy.
Gallardo wants women in Chile who aren't able to look after their babies to be able to leave them in safe places too - she suggests dedicated areas in hospitals.
In the 12 years since Aurora's funeral, Gallardo has adopted and buried three more dead children - Manuel, Victor and Cristobal.

Bernarda Gallardo at the funeral of one of the babies

She's currently in the process of doing the same for another little girl, Margarita. She wants to give them "their dignity and for them to have somewhere to rest in peace".
Gallardo's story inspired Chilean director, Rodrigo Sepulveda to make a film about her. Named after Aurora, the prize-winning movie is currently being shown across Chile and at film festivals around the world.
Gallardo often visits the graves of the babies she has buried and sometimes notices that other people have left flowers.
She wonders whether some may be from the biological mothers and takes comfort from the fact that they are able to mourn knowing that their children are at peace.
